Trabecular Metal Material is made of biocompatible, corrosion-resistant tantalum.7-11

Trabecular Metal Material is made of tantalum, element number 73 in the periodic table. Tantalum is a highly biocompatible and corrosion-resistant metal 7-11 used in various implantable devices for over 60 years,12-16 including a dental implant in the 1940s.16 Per-Ingvar Brånemark, known as the father of modern dental implantology, conducted osseointegration research in the 1950s utilizing tantalum.17

Trabecular Metal Material: The Next Best Thing to BoneTM
The implant’s Trabecular Metal Material mid-section has been designed to be structurally similar to cancellous bone.2,3,6

Two coronal surface configurations are available:
• 0.5mm Machined Titanium
• MTX Microtexturing to the top

Platform PlusTM Technology

The proprietary internal hex connection, utilized with Zimmer Dental’s friction-fit abutments, has been documented to shield crestal bone from concentrated occlusal forces as demonstrated in an invitro FEA study. Results are not necessarily predictive of human clinical results.50,51

 Trabecular Metal Technology

Trabecular Metal Technology is a three-dimensional material, not an implant surface or coating. Its structure is similar to cancellous bone.4-6 Trabecular Metal Material has up to 80% porosity.2-4,6,24,25 Zimmer has utilized Trabecular Metal Material - The Best Thing Next to Bone - for over a decade in implantable orthopaedic devices. Now Zimmer brings this unique technology to implant dentistry with the Trabecular Metal Dental Implant.
Trabecular Metal Material’s structure is similar to cancellous bone.4-6

  •  Uniform three-dimensional cellular architecture with up to 80% porosity2-4,6,24,25
  •  Textured surface topography26,27
  •   Low modulus of elasticity similar to cancellous bone.4,5

Trabecular Metal Material is fabricated in Zimmer’s TMT facility in Parsippany, New Jersey.

The Trabecular Metal process demands strict specifications for pore size, and shape to ensure a cancellous bone-like structure is obtained. Utilizing a thermal deposition process, elemental tantalum is deposited onto a substrate, creating a textured surface topography to build Trabecular Metal Material, one atom at a time.
This proprietary process utilizes the physical and biological properties of tantalum to create a unique material that has a structure similar to cancellous bone.4-6
